Caution to Writers

I know it’s been a while since I have last posted. I wish I was blogging with something way more positive, but I wanted to make this post to help others.

This post comes to you with some embarrassment on my end. Earlier this summer I sent a writing sample to a website called IAPWE that supposedly pays writers and editors on a per word basis. Before applying or signing up for anything, I always research everything. I then have at least two other people look it up just to be sure. I’m like that with anything. Whether that’s readers I had in college or applying for work, I always do my homework. One reader actually called me out on how I would feel out the kids helping me. It changed my life for the better and he is one of the most trusted people I know, but that’s for another time. Some of my friends say I’m too careful sometimes.

Mom and my bestie looked at the IAPWE site and did more research. I thought the way they wanted you to apply was a little vague, but found no negative articles. Until today. Thankfully, I never signed up for any membership, free or paid, but my bestie found various articles (here and here) talking about this scam. I have known about scams my entire life and am surprised this one got us, two smart and educated women. I hope this post helps any Freelancers like me.

  1. I really good resource for writers is called Duotrope. You can try it for free for a week. They have a list of over 7,000 places that accept submissions and you can even search for places that pay.

I also write for a Magazine called CAPTIVATING! We don’t pay, but we publish writing by people with disabilities for disabilities 🙂
